Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does your martial art have kata or forms?

A: Yes, but not like you might have seen elsewhere. Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu uses five short forms called the Sanshin no Kata as a base of movements we continually practice and from which other movements grow. These variations are called henka.

Q: Is your martial art soft or hard / internal or external?

A: This is a difficult question to answer as Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu does not fit neatly into either category. Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu can be soft and elusive or hard and disruptive (or soft and disruptive and hard and elusive). We try not to categorize too much.

Q: What degree does one have to have in order to become a Shidoshi (teacher)?

A: A person must have his or her Godan (5th degree blackbelt) awarded to him or her from either Hatsumi Soke or one of the senior instructors in Japan in order to be a full instructor

Q: Must one train in Japan to participate in the art?

A: No; though it is recommended that practitioners take a trip at least every two years to Japan after they have been given a shodan.
